Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] "Army must give up on incineration" |
=46rom the January 16, 2001 Lexington (KY) Herald-Leader Editorial Page: Nerve gas disposal Army must give up on incineration, seek alternatives One thing should be perfectly clear: Opposition to burning chemical weapons in Madison County is overwhelming. After a public hearing last week, the Army surely understands that incineration is out as a practical option for disposing of 523 tons of nerve and blister agent stored at Bluegrass Army Depot near Richmond. The political obstacles could never be overcome. And it's important to note that the public opposition is well-founded, well-informed and reinforced by spotty safety records at Army nerve-gas incinerators in remote sites on a Pacific island and the middle of the Utah desert, not, significantly, next door to a bustling town and regional university..... The Army can speed a solution by formally removing incineration from consideration at the first possible opportunity. Then the focus could turn to where it should be: the alternative technologies....
