http://www.abqjournal.com/news/243736news02-06-01.htm Tuesday, February 6, 2001 Missile-Range Grazing Stops The Associated Press ALAMOGORDO — Grazing is ending in a 2-mile-wide buffer zone that separates private ranching land from White Sands Missile Range as the federal government fences off the missile range. "Shoot, they're taking two-thirds of this ranch," said John Cherry, stepfather of one of the three owners of the Lazy S 3 Ranch west of Tularosa. "And there's not gonna be any left that's got any grass on it. All the good grass was further out." What is now White Sands Missile Range grew out of the Alamogordo Bombing Range, formed in 1942 during World War II to train pilots.
