Update: On Feb. 14, 2001, US Senators Arlen Specter and Rick Santorum as well
as Congressman Don Sherwood wrote Administrator Whitman to afford Ombudsman
Martin an opportunity to proceed with the Marjol Battery Ombudsman's case in
Throop, PA - without hinderance.  On February 23, 2001, EPA Acting Asst. Ad.
Mike
Shapiro orally prohibited Hugh Kaufman from performing any more
investigations.
(Note: Pre-Approval of national Ombudsman investigatory activities were never
required before the Bush Administration took Office).  On Feb. 26, 2001, the
mayor of Throop, PA and all City Council members voted to send a letter to
Ms. Whitman requesting that she
stop prohibiting Mr. Kaufman from performing his Official duties and allow
his continued investigation of the Marjol Battery case. On March 2, 2001, the
Project on Government Oversight (POGO) identified the fact that Mr. Shapiro
signed the (restricting) Proposed Ombudsman Guidelines at the same time that
his decisions (as Director of the Office of Solid Waste-OSW) were being
investigated by Mr. Kaufman and

Ombudman Martin in the Marjol Battery case!
"Nuclear" may be an understatement!
