The Army says it can't afford the $30 million to $70 million it would take to remove unexploded artillery shells and make Camp Bonneville safe for public use. So it's considering transferring the 3,800 acres to the Washington Army National Guard instead of Clark County, said Eric Waehling, the base environmental coordinator. Cleanup of antifreeze, fuel oil and other chemicals that threaten groundwater will continue, Waehling said. A committee of county officials and residents advising the Army about restoration of Camp Bonneville seemed stunned to hear the news from Waehling at a meeting last week.
