BAIRD WORKING FOR SOLUTIONS AT CAMP BONNEVILLE ARMY CAN'T JUST WALK AWAY, U.S. REP SAYS Sunday, April 15, 2001 By ERIN MIDDLEWOOD, Columbian staff writer U.S. Rep. Brian Baird plans to tour Camp Bonneville this week in an effort to rescue plans for public use of the former Army base. The Army stopped training at Camp Bonneville in 1995 and began cleanup with the intention of retiring it as a military installation and handing over the 3,800 acres to Clark County for a regional park. But the Army announced in March that it can't afford the $30 million to $70 million it would take to remove unexploded artillery shells and make Camp Bonneville safe. Instead, the Army is considering transferring use of the base to the Washington Army National Guard, which would not require the same extensive cleanup. The news was crushing to the county, which had developed a plan to turn Camp Bonneville into a regional park with trails and picnic areas. ...
