UXO experts say Mare Island cleanup botched Vallejo Times-Herald By Amy Harter, Matthias Gafni and JESSICA LADNY, Times-Herald staff writers http://www.timesheraldonline.com/display/inn_news/news1.txt For decades, tons of old or defective weaponry and ammunition were buried on Mare Island or tossed unceremoniously into the nearby strait as part of naval operations that built scores of warships. Today, say several experts hired on a search-and-destroy mission to remove munitions, Mare Island is still a very dangerous place. That's because, they say, the Navy and others are either deliberately ignoring the potential hazards or, due to incompetence, haven't grasped the danger. These experts told the Times-Herald that in former shipyard locations destined for new businesses, or other civilian use, ordnance could someday explode, causing serious injuries, death and massive property damage.
