Unexploded shells hurt lake businesses relying on tourism Army corps dredges river, but removing explosives too expensive for towns http://www.ohio.com/all/2001/April/29/newsdocs/005507.htm The Akron Beacon Journal Press SANDUSKY: Businesses that rely on Lake Erie tourism hope the cleanup of unexploded shells from an old Army test range will revive their trade, but finding money for the project is no easy task. Business has suffered for 10 years since the government discovered during dredging that the Toussaint River west of Port Clinton was contaminated with grenades, rockets and ammunition. The Erie Ordnance Depot, now closed, operated for almost 50 years there. The military fired howitzers and machine guns from the Army site toward Lake Erie from 1918 until 1966. During war years, there was shelling nearly every day.
