Panel Members Defend Ordnance Cleanup

Members of an advisory panel overseeing the conversion of Mare Island
said Tuesday they remain confident about the Navy's cleanup of the
shipyard and voiced concern over what one called "sensationalized journalism."

The reaction by two members of the Mare Island Restoration Advisory
Board was prompted by a Times-Herald three-part series on the cleanup of
ordnance on the former naval shipyard. Numerous former UXO specialists
leveled allegations of widespread mismanagement, inexperience and safety violations.
