Officials Try to Resolve Toxic Issues at Hamilton

By Con Garretson

Federal officials will fix lingering environmental problems at Hamilton
and pick up the tab for the work, Marin County's congresswoman pledged yesterday.

Midway through a tour of the former military base yesterday, Rep. Lynn
Woolsey, D-Petaluma, announced that the Army had decided to release
nearly half of the $1.65 million requested by military cleanup
officials to deal with methane leaking from a former military landfill.

"I feel confident that the Army and Navy are going to work together,
that they are taking full responsibility for the problems and they know
it's their job to fix it, and that it will be at federal expense,"
Woolsey said.

Those on the tour heard the voices of protesters who were advocating
further environmental testing of the area, especially around the
proposed relocation site for the Novato Charter School.
