Saturday, June 23, 2001 Bombing tests ran on island in WWII In 1966, the land was given to Park Service By J.R. Gonzales Caller-Times http://www.caller.com/2001/june/23/today/localnew/3492.html If the U.S. Navy selects South Texas as the site of a bombing range to replace one on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, it won't be a first for the area. Beginning in World War II, Padre Island National Seashore was home to about seven bombing sites, located about 14 miles south of Bob Hall Pier and extending south for 35 miles. During that time, the island also was home to eight strafing targets. A similar site also was located on Matagorda Island.
