Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Federal Facilities compliance data |
from EPA's Enforcement and Compliance Update: June 26, 2001 _____________________________________________________________ Office of Compliance: Sector Facility Indexing Project (SFIP): In response to stakeholder interest, EPA has expanded the SFIP to include a subset of federal facilities. This information and a refresh of data concerning the five initial sectors included within the project is publicly available on the project's website (http://www.epa.gov/oeca/sfi). This expansion enables communities to obtain important compliance and enforcement information about local federal facilities, who are thus encouraged to become more accountable. The new federal facility subset, which joins approximately 625 facilities profiled in SFIP, includes those considered "major" under at least two of the three following statutes: the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The existing facilities address five industry sectors: pulp manufacturing, petroleum refining, automobile assembly, iron and steel manufacturing, and primary smelting and refining of nonferrous metals. As a community-right-to-know project, SFIP is a computerized database of environmental information providing the public with facility-level compliance data in one location on the Internet. SFIP includes such information as: a facility's compliance and enforcement history; pollutant releases and spills; and demographics of the surrounding community. Prior to expanding the project, EPA consulted with various groups, including environmental organizations, industry trade associations, several States, and the Environmental Council of the States (ECOS). As with the initial release of SFIP, Regions, States and the affected facilities were given the opportunity to review the data and resolve any data quality issues, thereby continuing to ensure that EPA maintain the public's confidence in the integrity of the data. The expansion to federal facilities has been viewed as a positive step in providing the public with additional information on the U.S. government's own environmental performance.
