Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Mercury Stockpile review |
The Defense National Stockpile Center (DNSC) is seeking public comment on a forthcoming Environment Impact Statement exploring long-term management alternatives for the nation's 4,408 metric tons of mercury. The stockpile has been declared excess, but DNSC suspended sales in 1994 in response to concerns about the global environmental impact of mercury use and release. For more information, see http://www.mercuryeis.com. Earlier this year DNSC held public scoping meetings in DC as well as the four communities in which the mercury is stored - New Haven, Indiana; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Somerville, New Jersey; and Warren, Ohio. It plans an update meeting August 2, 2001, at the Marriott Metro Center in Washington, DC.
