NAVY PULLS MOFFETT CLEANUP PROPOSAL by Chuck Carroll San Jose Mercury News Saturday, September 1, 2001 The Navy is going back to the drawing board with its plan to clean up a contaminated wetland at Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, sparking renewed hope among environmentalists and open space advocates who had been critical of the original proposal. The Navy withdrew the plan Friday in light of an embarrassing bureaucratic glitch that dumbfounded environmentalists: In drafting the cleanup plan, the Navy forgot to consult the Midpeninsula Open Space District, a government agency which owns 54 acres of seasonal wetland on the cleanup site adjacent to the former naval base now owned by NASA. ...
