Voters to decide fate of El Toro base By Gordon Smith COPLEY NEWS SERVICE For eight years, cities around Southern California have looked on anxiously as residents of Orange County argued about building a new commercial airport on the site of the old Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro. Three weeks from today, the people of Orange County will take a decisive vote on whether the former military base will be reincarnated as an airport or a huge regional park. The stakes for Measure W on the March 5 ballot are as big as the sprawling, 4,700-acre base just east of Interstate 5 near Irvine. An airport, supporters say, would profoundly boost the economy and facilitate future air travel throughout Southern California.
