Deal struck on Tustin base land The agreement between the city and the Navy allows development of the property. March 1, 2002 By MONICA VALENCIA The Orange County Register The city of Tustin and the Navy agreed to a deal late Thursday night that will allow the city to develop the 1,600-acre former Marine base. The deal was announced at 10:10 p.m. Earlier in the week, the Navy said it would put the land up for public sale if there was no agreement. The city is still working out details of a separate agreement that would give Santa Ana Unified 22 acres to build a K-8 school, while Rancho Santiago Community College Districts gets 15 acres. Santa Ana is also to receive $38million to build a high school elsewhere. Tustin can now begin the planning process to start turning the base into homes, businesses, a park and a golf course.
