Guard set to dig up J Ranges

A computerized map of the former firing ranges on Camp Edwards shows the
location of buried metal, possibly unexploded ordnance.

CAMP EDWARDS - With sophisticated magnetometers that combed the old
training ranges foot by foot, the military last year produced geological
maps of metal underground. And, as expected, large blotches on the map
tell the story of more than a dozen pockets of buried metal in an area
that hugs the Sandwich border.

Now, it's time to dig.

The National Guard has orders to remove the remnants of years of
training - in this case, the work of Defense contractors in the former J
Ranges near the neighborhood of Forestdale. They've already found
pockets of buried ordnance in this area, occasionally in mass disposal
pits.
