Expert panel scrutinizes studies of radar safety By KEVIN DENNEHY STAFF WRITER FALMOUTH - They came to Cape Cod yesterday charged with addressing a public health question that's been asked around here for two decades. Are the microwaves that pulse in all directions from the 10-story PAVE PAWS radar station as safe as regular radar? Or do those microwaves pose health risks to those who live around the Air Force radar station that science simply hasn't figured out yet? The National Research Council has assembled an 11-member panel it hopes can eventually provide some answers. If anyone can, some suggest it is likely this group: There's a professor emeritus in epidemiology from Yale, a biostatistician from Johns Hopkins University, an electrical engineer from the University of Colorado at Boulder are among the panelists. The council, an independent agency of the National Academy of Sciences that provides research for the government, will pore through hundreds, if not thousands, of radar studies. And by next September they hope to decide whether existing studies of radar can even be applied to this radar that some have called unique, and whether more research should be conducted.
