July 18, 2002 Air Force apologizes for practice bombs By Chris Roberts Associated Press HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. ? The pilot of a stealth fighter who inadvertently dropped three 25-pound practice bombs in or near towns in rural West Texas and southern New Mexico was targeting trash bins and other structures in a ?camera attack,? the pilot?s wing commander said Thursday. ?For us, this is not the way we do business, and we?re very disappointed it happened,? said Brig. Gen. Marc Rogers, commander of the 49th Fighter Wing at Holloman. The pilot, who is grounded during an investigation, did not know there were practice bombs aboard the F-117A Nighthawk, he said. The bombs crashed into a home in Monahans, Texas, and landed near roads in Pecos, Texas, and Maljimar in southern New Mexico. No one was injured.
