The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans a complete excavation of the land
around two houses in the District's Spring Valley neighborhood beginning
next week, the latest step in its cleanup of possible World War I
munitions and contaminants near American University in Northwest
Washington.

Army officials held a media briefing yesterday to introduce the bevy of
trucks and specialized equipment that are to descend on the 5000 block
of Sedgwick Street on Monday and remain there for at least two to four
weeks -- longer if a significant cache of munitions or other hazardous
waste is discovered.
