Leukemia Ties Fallon with Town in Arizona Frank X. Mullen Jr. RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL 8/25/2002 SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. ? This small town in the Sonoran desert has a lot in common with Fallon, a tiny berg in the Nevada desert, but the most compelling similarity is that both communities have a childhood leukemia cluster. Both are located in a wide, beautiful bowl of mountains. Both host military aircraft whose contrails sometimes make checkerboards in a clear sky. The planes use the same JP-8 fuel. Both have farms that make the desert bloom and are located in historic mining districts. Each has a long main street that is also a major highway, bristling with signs for businesses and restaurants and motels. And both have children suffering from leukemia at a rate that defies national averages. For two years, Nevada and federal investigators have put Fallon under a microscope to find the serial killer that has infected 16 children and left three dead.
