Plan Adopted for S.F. Presidio 30-year Design for National Park Kathleen Sullivan, San Francisco Chronicle Thursday, August 29, 2002 . The federal agency that oversees the Presidio of San Francisco has adopted a 30-year master plan for the national park, ending an often contentious public review process that began two years ago. Standing in front of a row of historic, red brick barracks on the former military post, Craig Middleton, acting executive director of the Presidio Trust, announced Wednesday that its 7-member board of directors had unanimously adopted the plan presented to the public last May. "The plan will preserve the Presidio for public use forever," Middleton said. The 174-page plan describes how the federal agency will preserve historic buildings, restore open space and protect the park's natural beauty -- and generate enough income to be financially self-sufficient by 2013, the year federal subsidies will end. It will replace a management plan created by the National Park Service in 1994, two years before Congress turned over control over most of the park's land and buildings to the Presidio Trust. ...
