Money transferred for flyover By Dennis J. Carroll The Hawk Eye The Army took an another step toward a tree?top flyover of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant Wednesday, transferring about $500,000 to the plant for the radiation?detection project. "It will be a fence?to?fence operation, covering all 19,000 acres," said the Middletown plant's commander, Lt. Col. Yolanda Dennis?Lowman. Officials hope to conduct the flyover in mid to late October before winter sets in. A specially?designed helicopter will fly over the plant with high?tech radiation gear as part of an effort to scout for possible sources of radioactive contamination that may still be lying around from decades of nuclear weapons production. The Army initially balked at conducting the flyover, contending it is not necessary and would not answer important questions about contamination, but relented during a meeting of Pentagon officials in Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack's office last month. This article can be viewed at: http://www.thehawkeye.com/daily/stories/ln7_0912.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
