[OHIO] Residents stand up for Marines Marine wife says she?s heard discouraging words By Timothy R. Gaffney and Cathy Mong e-mail address: timothy_gaffney@coxohio.com Dayton Daily News DAYTON | Barbara Carl said she hardly notices the loud beat of helicopter blades when a Marine Corps chopper flies over. But that's understandable. Carl, a Dayton native, is the wife of one of the 600-odd Marines in town for two weeks of urban training. The Jacksonville, N.C., resident said she has found it hard to understand the negative comments about the exercise she said she has heard and read since she and her husband, Lt. Stephen Carl, arrived last week with their 11-year-old daughter. Both are from the Dayton area. Stephen Carl is from Centerville, she said, and the training exercise gave them a chance to come back and visit their families. In their 13 years of marriage and his 14 years as a Marine, their relocations and his deployments have kept them from getting home very often, she said. Carl said she wasn't expecting the negative comments she said she has read in the news media and overheard in restaurants and shopping malls. "It's hard to be in your hometown and hear people bash what the Marines are doing," she said. "These are the guys who defend your freedom."
