[Kansas] Senate to hear witnesses on testing Veterans: Legislation would help expedite declassifying materials By Matt Moline Special to The Capital-Journal The U.S. Senate's Armed Forces Committee is expected to hear testimony Thursday that the Department of Defense exposed thousands of U.S. Navy veterans to chemical warfare agents during secret military tests in the 1960s. The committee hearing was called this past week by Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, according to retired U.S. Navy corpsman Jim Druckemiller, of Topeka, who has emerged as the unofficial national spokesman for veterans who have called for public disclosure of the covert DOD tests. According to Druckemiller, tests known as Project SHAD involved dozens of U.S. Navy ships between 1963 and 1970, while exposing as many as 16,000 servicemen to lethal doses of sarin and VX nerve gases and anthrax-like bacillus globigii spores, among other dangerous contaminants.
