Wamego silo-area wells dirty

WAMEGO ? Almost half of the 50 private wells tested that are near the
former Atlas-E Missile Base west of Wamego have been found to be above
the maximum level for trichlorethylene contamination, officials with the
Kansas Department of Health and Environment say.

The updated information was presented to property owners at a recent
meeting co-sponsored by the KDHE, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the
Environmental Protection Agency. KDHE has identified 67 water wells in
the test site east of the missile base, 21 of which tested at or above
five parts per billion of trichlorethylene (TCE). That?s above the
maximum contaminant level for drinking water established by the EPA.

State and federal officials were able to enter the property after Chris
Malone, a Sacramento businessman, bought the property for $140,000 in a
Pottawatomie County sheriff?s auction in September.
