Pentagon official says sprawl could endanger bases By Sig Christenson Express-News Military Writer Web Posted : 10/29/2002 12:00 AM AUSTIN ? A top Pentagon official warned Monday that communities failing to curb urban sprawl near training installations risk losing them in the 2005 base closure round. Raymond F. DuBois Jr., deputy undersecretary of defense for installations and environment, told the San Antonio Express-News that urban encroachment must be blunted at installations where troop training takes place because it threatens readiness. "If an installation today ? and the community in which it resides ? doesn't address encroachment issues and thereby training opportunities are diminished and degraded, there is an inevitable conclusion that the military value of that installation is less than what it was once," he said.
