What a crock!!! -sheila Journal of Aerospace and Defense Industry News April 20th, 2001 Viewpoint Southwest bases create environmental treasures by James E. Simmons SWDA Members of the Southwest Defense Alliance are briefing elected officials, business organizations and civic leaders on the results of a new data compilation by the Aerospace Office in Lancaster Calif. The new study shows compelling examples of the positive environmental stewardship conducted by the civilian and military leadership at important Department of Defense research labs, test ranges and training bases throughout the American Southwest. These management practices and programs have ensured preservation of cultural and natural resources that are unequivocal environmental treasures for the American people. There is an understandable perception in the general public that some, perhaps many, of the military lands in the Southwest are bombing ranges. These places are remote, often desert, environments. They have been safely tucked away from population centers for decades so as not to endanger the citizenry or commerce. Defense weapons work, be it research, testing or training, usually connotes bangs and booms. Such goings-on are essential, people generally acknowledge, but they surely must have routine downsides that accompany shooting things down and blowing things up.
