[Washington, D.C.] Ladner announces arsenic cleanup end in sight By MACKENZIE RYAN Eagle Staff Writer Monday, November 18, 2002 The arsenic clean-up by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is entering its final phase of removing and replacing soil on the intramural field and around the Child Development Center, according to a statement from AU President Benjamin Ladner. The area was the site of weapons and chemical disposal by the U.S. Army during World War I. The clean-up began last July after AU filed an administrative claim with the U.S. Army asking for $86.6 million in damages related to the discovery of arsenic on campus, The Eagle reported last July. The Eagle reported last week that since the clean-up operation began, hundreds of tons of contaminated soil have been removed, as well as toxic chemicals and munitions. The last phase of the clean-up is the excavation of items detected in the geophysical survey, according to the statement.
