Wompatuck State Park will soon include more land By Carol Britton Meyer / cmeyer@cnc.com Thursday, November 21, 2002 Wompatuck State Park will soon be expanded by 125 acres. The addition of more recreational space will be welcomed by residents, naturalists, and others who walk, bike, jog, and hike in the park. The parcel, a former ammunitions facility of the Cohasset Naval Annex which is currently controlled by the Army, is located at the end of Leavitt Street. An environmental cleanup of the "Hingham Annex" parcel is wrapping up, thus paving the way for the property to become part of the state park system under the Department of Environmental Management (DEM). Before that happens, however, there will be a public comment period. The property must remain parkland. A copy of the final document, the "Comprehensive Site Assessment Phase II Report," is available for review at Hingham Public Library. "This is a fine example of federal, state, and private cooperation, which will benefit the town," said Selectmen Chairman Mathew MacIver.
