The 16,000 figure, shown in the press release, was in error but here is another figure that is worth looking into. Below is a paragraph from the DOE -- Long-Term Stewardship Strategic Plan -- draft - Version 2.0. "The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, states, and local governments are grappling with issues related to the cleanup and application of institutional/land-use controls at over 400,000 sites to ensure that underutilized or abandoned property may be reused despite the associated environmental liabilities." This paragraph is contained under a section heading covering the scope of the problem. I suspect the large figure includes a full set of corrective action sites (CAS), as opposed to corrective action units (CAU). The set may contain numerous other regulatory entities as well. The 400,000 figure may have been used to suggest that the DOE's 100 to 200 likely LTS sites is small in comparison. This draft report did not include any reference citations. Perhaps, one of the CPEO readers can provide a citation for this 400,000 figure. This report can be viewed at: "Department of Energy's Long-Term Stewardship Strategic Plan - Predecisional Draft Version 2.0," June 21, 2002. http://ndep.nv.gov/lts/strategiplanrev2b.pdf [39 Pages - 345KB] [The 400,000 figure is at PDF Page 16 of 39] Vernon Brechin Mountain View, CA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
