Feinstein asks U.S. for cleanup helpINLAND: She says toxic groundwater may have begun with Army sites in north Rialto in the 1940s. 12/04/2002 By SHARON McNARY THE PRESS-ENTERPRISESen. Dianne Feinstein has called on two federal agencies to help pay for the cleanup of perchlorate-contaminated groundwater because it may have originated from old Army and defense sites in north Rialto. Feinstein this week wrote letters to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and to Christine Todd Whitman, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. She asked Rumsfeld for money from the Formerly Used Defense Sites program. She said the Department of Defense "bears a special responsibility" because U.S. Army and defense contractors used the land in north Rialto where the contamination is concentrated. She asked Whitman to assist communities whose drinking wells have been contaminated. Four water utilities serving Fontana, Rialto, Colton and unincorporated areas of the county have shut or restricted use of 20 wells.
