New Jersey Woolwich hopes to speed base cleanup Sunday, January 26, 2003 By TIM ZATZARINY JR. Courier-Post Staff WOOLWICH The township proposes to redevelop an abandoned Cold War- era missile base here. But it can't acquire the property from the federal government until the site is decontaminated. Because the contamination is relatively minor, the site on Paulsboro-Swedesboro Road is a low priority project for the federal government. Mayor Joe Chila hopes an advisory committee of residents formed last week can help cut through the lengthy process of acquiring the 39-acre property on Paulsboro-Swedesboro Road. Officials in this rapidly growing township of 3,032 people want to convert the former PH-58 Swedesboro Nike- Hercules Missile Base for commercial or industrial use.
