Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Roads to Beale gain priority |
California Tuesday, January 28, 2003 Roads to Beale gain priority Caltrans seeking federal funds for repairs Rob Young Appeal-Democrat Repairing roads around Beale Air Force Base has been made a priority by the California Department of Transportation, a Yuba County official said Monday Repairing the roads, counted among the worst of any around the country's military bases, is seen as a key to retaining Beale. Area officials fear Beale may be included in the next round of base closures in 2005. Kevin Mallen, Yuba County public works director, told the Beale Military Base Retention Committee that Caltrans is recommending that Federal Highway Administration funds be used for the repairs. The county, not the state, owns the roads, but Caltrans can influence how the federal dollars are spent, Mallen said. Repairs would cost an estimated $10 million. Congress has tentatively earmarked $1 million for the project during the current fiscal year, Mallen said. The remaining $9 million is still "up in the air," he said.
