EPA blasts Navy report Agency questions study that claims Moffett residents safe By Julie O'Shea The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week sharply criticized a Navy report that claimed residents of a Moffett Field military housing area were safe from pollution beneath their homes. EPA's comments call the conclusions of the study -- which says residents have no elevated risk of cancer or other ailments -- "not consistent with the data" the Navy gathered. Other parts of the report were called "incomplete," and some conclusions "incorrect." Released last month, the Navy document was intended to study whether trichloroethene (TCE) -- a solvent linked to cancer, lupus and other ailments -- which was leaked into groundwater by military and industrial operations, was endangering residents by escaping into homes and outdoor air in the Orion Park housing complex. "In general, I'd say we think the Navy's conclusions are not consistent with the data," said Alana Lee, EPA's project manager for Moffett Field.
