Bayonne Harbor, NJ THE JERSEY JOURNAL Peninsula will shoot for $300M in federal funds Most projects involve upgrading transit links Wednesday, March 26, 2003 By Ronald Leir Journal staff writer Bayonne will be seeking more than $300 million in federal funding to spur development of the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, formerly the Military Ocean Terminal. And the city will be relying heavily on Washington insiders like Rep. Robert Menendez, D-Hoboken, who has visited Bayonne twice in the past two weeks, to help push for that cash this summer when Congress is due to consider a reauthorization of the Transportation Efficiency Act for the 21st Century, also known as "T-21." On Monday, former Rep. Robert Roe - who as then-chairman of the House Public Works Committee is credited with helping launch the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System - escorted Rep. James L. Oberstar, of Minnesota, the senior Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, on a Bayonne visit. The group toured the former Army base, where the city hopes to bring - among other transportation and infrastructure improvements - the much heralded Metropolitan Television Alliance broadcaster tower, which designers envision as the world's tallest structure. "The property needs improved transportation links by land and water to enhance its future economic development," said Mayor Joseph V. Doria Jr. "On the tour, we mentioned specifically the need for new road and rail connections." To that end, Doria said, the city is busily preparing a host of federal funding applications to finance a package of transit-related projects at or near the Peninsula.
