Alaska FAIRBANKS DAILY NEWS-MINER Meeting to consider military waste toxins By DAN RICE, Staff Writer April 8, 2003 An estimated 100 scientists, community leaders, health professionals and activists will meet in Fairbanks this week for a conference focusing on the effects of military hazardous waste sites and weapons testing on Alaska communities. The conference has been organized by Alaska Community Action on Toxics, which describes the event as "a statewide gathering for justice." ACAT Director Pamela Miller said the conference, which will be held Wednesday through Saturday at the Wedgewood Resort, represents a rare chance for experts and interested individuals to focus from the communities' perspective on military activity and contamination. "This is the first conference of its kind," Miller said. "Generally, Department of Defense holds meetings and conferences, but they tend to drive the agenda."
