Colorado Asbestos snags Lowry Excavation for new homes halted after discovery in soil at former AF base By Kristi Arellano and Jim Kirksey, Denver Post Staff Writers April 25, 2003 The state health department Thursday stopped excavation work at the Lowry redevelopment site following the discovery of asbestos in the soil. Builders found fragments containing asbestos, including steam pipes, water pipes and insulating materials, as they were digging foundations for new homes at the former Air Force base. The material has also been found in the yards of at least two occupied homes. The asbestos is believed to have come from a hospital complex of some 20 buildings that were demolished in two phases from 1959 to 1968 and 1972 through 1979. Officials said they were unaware that the complex had been demolished or that fragments had remained in the soil.
