New York NEWSDAY More Testing Delays Park Reopening Contamination inspection in Bethpage also postpones cleanup By Pat Burson STAFF WRITER April 30, 2003 The complete reopening of Bethpage Community Park, sections of which have been closed for almost a year because of soil contamination, will be delayed by more environmental testing, state and town officials said yesterday. The state Department of Environmental Conservation held information sessions yesterday at Bethpage Community Center to discuss a plan by Northrop Grumman Corp. to investigate contamination at the 19-acre park in Oyster Bay Town. Town officials had shut down the park in May after soil testing on the adjacent Northrop Grumman property also revealed elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, metals and other contaminants. Sections were reopened late last year. Northrop Grumman and the Navy are "equally responsible" for the contamination, said DEC spokesman Mark Lowery. The Navy contracted with the former Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. on defense projects.
