Washington OREGON LIVE Push on for Camp Bonneville 05/09/03 FOSTER CHURCH VANCOUVER -- An infusion of U.S. Army money may be flowing toward Clark County, earmarked to clean up Camp Bonneville. The site, which is controlled by the Army, is contaminated by unexploded munitions and toxic substances leaching into groundwater. The camp was used for training from 1909-96. Cleanup estimates have ranged from $30 million to $100 million. It could be less or more, depending on the level of cleanup that the Washington Department of Ecology requires. Planning to use the 3,840-acre site north of Camas for a park, the county proposes to take over cleanup responsibilities from the Army, and ownership transfer could occur as early as October. Ecology Department officials are cautious, however.
