Pentagon Is Accused of Hiding Report on Perchlorate Pollution
By PETER WALDMAN
May 19, 2003

Two Democratic members of the House of Representatives accused the
Pentagon of "covering up and hiding" information about the magnitude of
perchlorate contamination nationwide.

In a letter sent Friday to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Reps.
John Dingell (D., Mich.) and Hilda Solis (D., Calif.) accused the
Defense Department of concealing results of a 2001 survey that sought
detailed information about potential perchlorate contamination at
Defense Department sites dating to 1950. According to the letter, the
Environmental Protection Agency agreed not to issue a formal
"information request" to the Pentagon on the occurrence of perchlorate
pollution, but only if the Defense Department would give the EPA the
results of the national survey.

Yet more than two years later, the House members wrote, the Pentagon
still hasn't submitted the results to the EPA, prompting the members'
charge of a coverup. The representatives asked the Defense Department to
furnish them with the results of the survey by June 6.
