New Haven tells feds: No more Mercury storage forum sparks outcry By Andy Gammill The Journal Gazette NEW HAVEN - A parade of elected officeholders and area residents sent a clear message to the federal government Tuesday: No more mercury. Representatives from the federal Defense Logistics Agency spoke to a crowd of about 150 people in New Haven about the possibility that the U.S. military's excess mercury will be stockpiled near there. Opponents said they are tired of having others' waste put in their town. They questioned whether the mercury would become a terrorist target, how it would affect property values and what it would do to their health. "Sure, it's probably cheaper to bring it here, but that's not the whole issue," said state Sen. Bud Meeks, R-Leo-Cedarville. "This community is tired, and we need a break." Defense National Stockpile Center Administrator Cornel Holder will decide within a year what to do with the mercury, he said. He could decide to sell the mercury or leave it where it is, but an agency study recommends consolidating it in one location.
