Kansas KANSAS CITY STAR Residents don't want new landfill at Sunflower plant Army should drop landfill plans at Sunflower plant June 28, 2003 Pardon Johnson Countians if they aren't thrilled about the possibility of a new landfill at the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. The Army should pull the plug on this idea, which the county opposes because it would endanger future uses of the site. The county's master plan calls for large parks, housing, businesses and schools on the 9,000-acre site, which already contains four small landfills. The plan does not contain any new landfill. But the county does not control whether that proposed landfill can be placed on what is still federal property. County officials recently learned that the Army was paying for a feasibility study regarding a 12-acre landfill it may build there. The report is due in August.
