Massachusetts THE CAPE COD TIMES State extends lease review By Amanda Lehmert July 1, 2003 FALMOUTH - Representatives from the governor's office added a 15-day public comment period to the Massachusetts Military Reservation lease negotiations last night after many complained there was not enough public oversight of the process. The state is currently negotiating to extend the lease for the Army National Guard, Air National Guard and Coast Guard for another 25 years. The current lease ends in 2026. In a meeting at the Falmouth Holiday Inn, members of the public and elected officials expressed concern for specific parts of the lease as well as support of a continued military presence on Cape Cod. The governor's representatives quickly learned that the military's July 15 deadline to seal the deal on the lease would not meet the public's demands. _From politicians to environmental activists, the crowd of more than 80 asked to see the language in the lease, instead of just trusting the word of the governor's office about what will be included.
