Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Sweeping Up at Camp Hero |
New York HAMPTONS INDEPENDENT Sweeping Up at Camp Hero By Carey London July 16, 2003 Are unwary visitors walking near ticking time bombs in Montauk State Park? Perhaps, says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and that very prospect is cause for action. On Thursday, July 10, the Army Corp sponsored a meeting to inform the public about their ordnance removal project at Camp Hero. It is a follow up to an ordnance sampling of the area that took place 16 months ago. Mandated by the Department of Defense, the project, which began Monday, July 14, is operating within the FUDS (Formerly Used Defense Sites) Cleanup Program. With over 9,600 “contaminated sites” nationwide, the Army Corp finds Camp Hero to be less hazardous than other locations. “By comparison, [this area] is one of the very least contaminated sites we’ve seen,” said Bill Pearse, a contractor from EOD Technology, Inc., a company that specializes in “remediation” and removal of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and weaponry. Using a magnetometer, an instrument that measures magnetic fields and detects iron composites, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been searching for UXO leftover from firing practice by military personnel. They said the artillery could detonate at any moment. This article can be viewed at: http://www.indyeastend.com/detail.asp?cat=news&article=1040 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
