Carcinogen ranking hits trichloroethylene

Western European sales of the chlorinated solvent trichlorothylene fell
17% to 52,000
tonnes in 2002, trade association Eurochlor has reported. The main
reason was the
chemicals' reclassification by the EU as a "probable" rather than a
"possible" carcinogen,
Eurochlor says. Sales of trichloroethylene and the other main
chlorinated solvents
methylene chloride and perchloroethylene have been in steady decline for
seven years
under pressure from environmental and health regulation, and due to more
efficient usage (

). But 2002 saw the largest drop in trichloroethylene sales for a
decade. See
press release -- http://www.eurochlor.org/chlorine/news/news55.htm.
