Stryker impacts assessed
By Dan Rice
August 14, 2003

The phrase "environmental impact statement" is sure to create images of
soil studies, water analyses and air quality measurements.

But a draft environmental impact statement on Fort Wainwright's
transformation into a Stryker Brigade base for the U.S. Army reveals
that the conversion will likely mean much more than just impacts to the
natural world.

_From the local economy to recreational activities, the voluminous
statement details a host of potential changes the Stryker Brigade
conversion could bring to the Fairbanks area after the transformation is
complete in May 2005.

Army Alaska representatives were in Fairbanks Wednesday to give a
presentation about the Stryker Brigade change, answer questions from
citizens and collect comments that will be included once a final
environmental impact statement is drafted.
