Louisville to take control of old ordnance property
Navy cleanup of site almost completed

August 14, 2003

Spawned by World War II, the Louisville Naval Ordnance Station for
decades took up a sprawling, 10-block chunk of south Louisville,
churning out some of the Navy's most potent weapons. At the height of
the Vietnam War, it had about 4,000 workers.

In 1995 the U.S. government acceded to heavy pressure from local
officials to privatize the base, and it became the Technology Park of
Greater Louisville. It has been managed by the Louisville-Jefferson
County Redevelopment Authority since August 1996, and the goal has been
for local government to assume ownership of the 142 acres.

Nearly seven years later, that goal — long stymied, primarily by
environmental concerns — is about to be realized.

The transfer of title, subject to the state's approval of the Navy's
final environmental cleanup, should come by year's end, said Bruce
Traughber, secretary of Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson's Community
Development Cabinet.
