South Dakota ABERDEEN AMERICAN NEWS Crews find projectile at former weapons site By Carson Walker Posted on Thu, Aug. 28, 2003 SIOUX FALLS - Workers at the former Black Hills Army Depot unearthed a rusty old rocket containing an unknown substance in a spot primarily used to destroy chemical weapons, a state official said Wednesday. Crews discovered the 155 mm projectile Tuesday while clearing the surface of an area called Burning Ground 1 to prepare it for erosion control work, said Jill Solberg, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers official in Omaha, Neb. ''They have no clue as to what era it's from. There are no markings on it. That's why they're bringing in the experts,'' she said. A bomb squad from Ellsworth Air Force Base evaluated the bomb, which was moved to one of the 800 earthen igloos at the southwestern South Dakota depot once used to store the nation's munitions. A special Army unit from Arkansas is to arrive Friday for more tests on the weapon to figure out what it contains, she said. It's about 6 inches in diameter and just under 2 feet long.
