By Paige Austin and Linda Lou 07:45 AM PST on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 NORCO - Federal environmental officials collected water and soil samples from Norco schools and residential neighborhoods Tuesday in an effort to address public health concerns surrounding pollution at Wyle Labs. Geologists, chemists and technicians probed the ground and collected samples at Norco High School, Norco Elementary School, Goldenwest Lane and Hillside Avenue to determine whether hazardous waste from Wyle has leaked into the surrounding community. "We're taking a lot more samples than we would normally take on this kind of project, and it's mainly because of the community concerns," said Dawn Richmond, U.S. EPA site assessment manager. Wyle Labs is a Department of Defense contractor that has tested military and commercial products in the hills of Norco for nearly half a century. The samples collected Tuesday will be tested for a range of hazardous and cancer-causing chemicals already found in the ground at Wyle. Those include perchlorate, hydrazine, PCBs, lead, vinyl chloride and trichloroethylene. Dozens of people who have lived near Wyle or attended school nearby have come forward with cases of cancer and thyroid disorders, which they fear could be linked to the pollution. To date, there is no proof that the community has been exposed to contamination at Wyle.
