California MODESTO BEE Stanislaus eager to claim base By Ken Carlson Last Updated: December 9, 2003, 06:35:33 AM PST Stanislaus County supervisors are scheduled today to consider a series of steps toward taking over the former Crows Landing Navy base in February. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the current owner, has completed a draft environmental assessment concluding that 90 percent of the 1,528-acre facility is ready for transfer to the county. The property includes the two runways, taxiways and 1,120 acres of agricultural land, and is mostly free of contamination, officials said. The other 173 acres could be deeded to the county within five years, after the Navy removes any live ammunition from the ground and has systems in place to treat soil and groundwater contamination. The base served as a training field for Navy pilots from World War II through the Cold War, and also served as a research station for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
